Background

Family lore is that the parents of sisters Joan, Marie and Teresa Barker were John Joseph Barker (1903-1975) and Margaret Mary Walsh (1905-1992). Further, John Barker was the eldest son of George Barker and Mary Doyle, and Margaret Walsh was the third daughter of James Walsh and Mary McDonnell.

Barker Sisters, about 1939

It is easy enough to flesh out these facts with information from the Web (Time Line part 1). The question then is who were George Barker and Mary Doyle, and James Walsh and Mary McDonnell. This is not easy to pin down because Irish family history records are sparse (Sources) and the family names are quite common. In particular, (a) there are no worthwhile census records for Ireland before 1901, and (b) Roman Catholic parish registers do not record father's occupation. Still, soldier on. Time Line part 2 shows earlier members of the Barker family and the rationale for these claims.

George Barker?

Rationale ...

Working backwards from the marriage of George Barker and Mary Doyle ...

07 Jan 1901 Marriage of George Barker (of 2 Tara St, parents John and Amelia Barker of London)

and Mary Doyle (parents John and Cecilia Doyle of 57 St Albert Rd, Dublin) [1]

It seems the parents went back to England (if, indeed, they were at the wedding) ...

Q1 1917 Amelia Barker death registered, age 65 (born 1852) [Kensington, Vol 1A, Page 159]

  Q2 1918 John R Barker death registered, age 79 (born 1839) [Kensington, Vol 1A, Page 93]

Amelia was Irish and the family clearly lived in Ireland for many years, at least from 1875-1887. I can't find the family in the 1891 UK census so perhaps they were still in Ireland then. George claimed to have been born in Wexford about 1874. And in the 1911 English census Amelia claimed to be from Wexford.

This fits neatly with this marriage between Robert Barker and Amelia Truscott ...

and with these children ...

The Castletown mentioned above is, I think, Castletown House, Carne and not the Castletown near Gorey. I can't find Castletown House on the map but it is mentioned elsewhere. For example, it was reported that "Captain Hunt, agent to Sir Hugh Palliser, reported to be fired at on his way home from Wexford to Castletown House, Carne, 1847. It was generally believed at the time that he was not fired at — that some person was fowling near where he was passing. However that may be, Captain Hunt had two policemen to guard him until near his death, which took place a few years afterwards.

Children John and Kathleen are in the UK census with the correct birth dates. Can't find: marriage George/Barker; birth Cecilia Barker, but too many connections to be a coincidence.

John Barker claimed (in 1901) that he was born in Hatfield and (in 1870) that his father Robert Barker was a shepherd, and note

Barker Family

The story of Amelia Truscott and her father George Truscott continues here.

Robert Barker's origins are obscure. The 1851 census records he was born in Ashley, Sussex. There is no Ashley parish, town or village in Sussex, so where to look? Maybe Ashurst, Sussex? Then in 1861 he claims to be from Lewes, Sussex. Is there an Ashley in or near Lewes? There are two Ashley Houses in Sussex if this is what is meant. Ashley House in Bognor Regis, West Sussex, is now a residential care home with 14 residents. A big house but not a stately home. And there is an Ashley House, The Street, Boxgrove, Chichester PO18 0EE, close to Boxworth Priory, which could have been associated with a farm. I suppose it is possible Robert was a younger son of land-owners, and didn't inherit the farm. All very mysterious.

John and Margaret Barker

Walsh Family

This looks like a sound basis for research ...

31 Mch 1901 census

Household Members           Religion   Age   Born    Birth place      Occupation

Catherine   Walsh    Head   R C        54    1847    Queens County     [so James Walsh snr dead? Doesn't say widowed]

James       Walsh     Son   R C        24    1877    Dublin City      sawmill machinist

30 Jun 1901 marriage James Walsh (bach, full age, sawyer, of 64 New Street; father James Walsh, hotel servant)

and Mary McDonnell (spin, full age, of 10 Bradys Cottages; father Patrick McDonnell, labourer)

in St Andrews Church, South Dublin; witnesses Patrick Bree[?], Teresa McDonnell

02 April 1911 census

address: Residents of a house 40.2 in New Street (Merchants Quay (part of), Dublin)

Household Members               Religion   Age   Born    Birth place      Occupation

James       Walsh    Head       R C        35    1876    Dublin City      wood-working machinist

Mary        Walsh    Wife       R C        34    1877    Dublin City     [6 children, 5 living]

Catherine   Walsh    Daughter   R C         8    1903    Dublin City

Mary        Walsh    Daughter   R C         7    1904    Dublin City

Margaret    Walsh    Daughter   R C         5    1906    Dublin City

James       Walsh    Daughter   R C         4    1907    Dublin City

Josephine   Walsh    Daughter   R C         1    1910    Dublin City

So James was born 1875-1877 in Dublin, father James Walsh (hotel servant), mother Catherine.

You might think finding this birth would be an easy next step. In fact, without census records to help, we get lost in a sea of names.

Just one baptism meets these criteria and looks like a perfect fit ...

27 Dec 1875 James Christ Walsh baptised in St Nicholas' (Without), Dublin city, father: James Walsh, mother: Cath O'Neil

Residence Place: 3 Coombe, Dublin [Ancestry]

... but ...

1876 James Christopher Walsh death registered, age 0 [Dublin South 2 593] [Ancestry, FHL Film Number 101588]

... rules it out. So we are reduced to speculation. Perhaps James was confused about his age?

During 1873-1874 there were three more possibilities ...

17 Mar 1873 James Walsh born, address 16 Upper Exchange St, Dublin, father James Walsh, mother Kate Delany

bapt. 31 Mar 1873 in St Michael and John's, Dublin city [Parish Variants: Lower Exchange St.] [07360_03_0059.jpg]

25 Jun 1874 James Walsh born, address 171 Townsend St, Dublin, father James Walsh, mother Catherine Gennings, bapt. 29 Jun 1874

bapt. 29 Jun 1874 in St Andrew's, Dublin city [Parish Variants: Westland Row] [41885_b154596-00171.jpg] [09496_02_0092.jpg]

09 Jul 1874 James Walsh born, address Dublin, father James Walsh, mother Katharine Drennan [Ancestry, FHL Film Number 255909]

... but there is no reason to prefer one of them, even assuming that any of them is correct.

The same applies to Catherine X, born about 1847 in Queens County and married to James Walsh

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ has the census returns of Ireland 1901/1911 and census fragments and substitutes, 1821-51. There were censuses in 1813, 1821, 1831, 1841 and 1851, but most of the records have been lost. "In many cases, only one or two returns survive for a family for a county in a particular year, a poignant reminder of what we lost in the Four Courts fire of 1922."

Family Search has some Irish records. They have been indexed by Hugh Wallis ...

https://www.rootsireland.ie/ has "the most extensive ... database of Catholic Church records anywhere online" (and charges for them). But, "www.rootsireland.ie: ... has transcripts (without record-images) of most of the Roman Catholic records on the island of Ireland ...1975)" and "The major exceptions, where only small proportions of the records are transcribed, are counties Donegal, Monaghan and Wexford."

The National Library of Ireland has microfilm copies of almost all pre-1880 Roman Catholic parish registers on the island of Ireland. Access is free and print-outs of the records are allowed. See www.nli.ie.
